According to data from Hive’s State of Employee Retention Report 2023, the professional services industry saw a drop in retention rates of 4.4 per cent from 2021 to 2022, the largest drop off across any industry in the UK.
Why have retention rates dropped?
There can be many factors attributed to this drop off. Employees in the professional services industry are known to work long hours and can often be faced with high-pressure situations, affecting their work-life balance.
While this is indeed a factor, the negative aspects of working in this industry are common knowledge so it is unlikely to be the driving reason for a lower retention rate.
Another reason for lower retention rates could be pointed at a problem many other industries face, and that is the lack of technological know-how in younger professionals.
This may seem surprising, after all, the younger generation have grown up using computers, tablets and all the latest technological advancements.
However, these technologies are often extremely easy to use and intuitive, nothing like more complex software such as Microsoft Excel and other platforms that are often used in the workplace.
‘Tech shame’
For a generation so used to simplicity, software that is slightly harder to use can appear daunting.
A 2022 study from Hewlett Packard found that one in five 18–29-year-olds asked said that they felt judged when experiencing technical issues.
A younger employee could well walk out of their job if they can’t get on with the technology in place.
They could even move to a competitor who has more user-friendly software, this could be the difference between acquiring and keeping new talent or losing them.
This frustration cannot just be directed at younger employees, however.
Even older members of staff who are well versed in their workplace technologies may soon grow tired of software that is complicated and time consuming, especially as they too adapt to newer technologies they use outside of work.
What makes a software system intuitive?
An intuitive software system is one that is user-friendly and easy to understand. It requires minimal training to use, and users can navigate through the system effortlessly, making their tasks easier and more efficient.
These systems are designed with the end-user in mind, focusing on simplicity, ease of use, and a user-friendly interface.
The role of intuitive software systems in staff retention and recruitment
Intuitive software systems enhance productivity by simplifying complex tasks. They eliminate unnecessary steps, automate repetitive tasks, and provide easy access to information.
This efficiency allows employees to focus on their core responsibilities, rather than the technical aspects of technology, leading to fewer frustrations, greater efficiencies and increased job satisfaction, which leads to higher retention rates.
Reduced training time and ease of use
The simplicity of intuitive software systems reduces the need for extensive training. New hires can quickly get up to speed, reducing onboarding time and costs.
This ease of use is particularly attractive to potential employees, making the firm more appealing to prospective talent.
This is especially true of the younger generation, whose expectations for modern, intuitive tools will be far greater than their older counterparts.
Firms that use outdated or complicated systems may struggle to attract and retain this talent.
On the other hand, firms that invest in intuitive software systems demonstrate their commitment to innovation and continuous improvement, making them more attractive to prospective employees.
Improving employee engagement
Intuitive software systems improve employee engagement by providing tools that are easy to use and that help employees succeed in their roles.
When employees feel empowered and competent, they are more likely to be satisfied with their jobs and stay with the company.
Intuitive software systems are no longer a luxury but a necessity for professional services firms. They not only enhance productivity and efficiency but also play a crucial role in staff retention and recruitment.
